Affirmations for Recovery

During the early stages of my recovery, I didn’t take AFFIRMATIONS seriously because inpatient treatment taught it as “fake it until you make it.” I hated that! Later, when I created my own recovery plan, I said them with the intention of what I knew could be possible and true. Saying these truths over and over again sends a clear message to our brain that this is important.

What messages are you sending to your brain? For example, if you’ve ever been pregnant, you will notice pregnant people ALL OVER THE PLACE. Or have you ever thought of buying a Silver 4 Runner and suddenly that’s all you see on the road? That’s because your RAS knows that information is important to you. SO, how do you get your RAS to work for you! Believe in the power of these affirmations and they will work. They must be said or read or written many times per day.

How: Choose one or two, max. Print these out or write them out yourself on index cards or stationary. Writing actually helps you retain the information better!

What: Put them where you can see them. On your bathroom mirror or next to your bed. In your car. And then…SAY them aloud. LOUDLY. Sing them, recite them in your head, daily.

Where: Anywhere and everywhere. Here are some examples:

– The shower

– In front of the mirror

– While you’re driving

– While you’re eating

– Before you’re going to bed or as you’re praying

Why these are important: it’s important to stay positive; these help you stay uplifted about yourself and recovery. Once you say these over and over again, you will start to believe them. You are, after all, retraining your beliefs. Beliefs turn into convictions which will cause you to take action.

Then what: after you’ve mastered one or two, go ahead and try another. But not until you feel you’ve really got the one or two engrained in your mind and soul.

I am in charge of my life.

I love myself deeply and completely.

I matter and what I have to offer this world matters.

I am open to all possibilities.

I belong and I am good enough.

I can make good choices that serve me.

I know who I am.

I am beautiful.

I let of everything that no longer serves me.

I choose to be positive about my future.

I am desirable.

Today I choose recovery.

I am lovable.

I follow my heart and listen to my instincts.

I will believe in myself.

I am a child of God.

I am complete just the way I am.
